What makes a good technical writer?

The 80/20 Principle

Strong writing skills are necessary for any technical writer or communicator. While important, writing is only a small part of the picture. A host of other duties come before writing, such as effective research, audience analysis, and outlining. While the percentages may vary, about 80% of the work to create effective documentation (or other items) is not actually writing.

Tech-Savvy

The "tech" in technical communication doesn't stand for technology. That said, I do have a great interest in all things technological! I built my first computer by myself when I was 12, and I've taught myself all sorts of things throughout the years. I'm always fascinated by just how far technology has come in such a short time, and I'm excited to see where we push those boundaries in the future.

Curiosity

When I was little, I used to get into everything, and not always in a good way! My aunt got after me one day for being a bit too inquisitive. She called me curious, and I resented the statement as a matter of course, snidely stating "I am NOT!" She explained what the word meant, and I replied "Well, maybe I am. Just a little!" I still hold that curious nature to this day, eager to explore and learn new things no matter the subject matter!

Knowledge

Knowledge is essential to every project. I'm not omniscient, however! During the writing/creating process, I start with what subject knowledge I already have and treat that as a "core," just like an onion. Then, I take stock of the project and figure out what I areas I need to have knowledge in to complete my work. I'll reach out to stakeholders, SMEs, and project managers/owners to fill my gaps, exploring out into each successive layer to complete my knowledge onion. Once I fill those gaps and have what I need to work on the project, I get started!

Ambivert

While wholly capable of contributing synergistically in a team environment, I'm also comfortable working on my own. I possess excellent organizational and time-management skills, able to self-direct and focus on deliverables. Conversely, I am also able to integrate with a broader team and work collaboratively, multitasking and wearing varied hats to complete projects on or ahead of schedule.
